On the night of May 16/17 1943 nineteen Lancasters of the newly formed 617 Squadron took off from Scampton to attack the Ruhr dams. The aircraft were specially adapted to carry a "bouncing bomb" developed by Barnes Wallis and their mission was to prove successful. Their leader was Wing Commander Guy Gibson and it is his aircraft corgi have modelled here. For his gallantry during the raid Gibson was to receive the Victoria Cross sadly he was killed later in the war.
